How to choose the right diamond tools
What actually decides the result, rather than what is easiest to compare on a spec sheet.
Understanding grit progression
Diamond tools are categorised by grit size, which determines how aggressively they remove material. Lower grits (30–100) grind and take out heavy scratching. Mid-range grits (200–800) hone and refine the surface. Higher grits (1500–3000+) bring it to a mirror polish.
Why steps cannot be skipped
Each stage only removes the scratch pattern left by the one before it. Skip ahead and that earlier pattern stays visible under everything applied afterwards — polish cannot compensate for work that was rushed underneath it.
Grinding versus polishing
Grinding uses metal-bonded diamonds to aggressively remove material, correct lippage and eliminate deep scratches. Polishing uses resin-bonded diamonds to refine the surface and create optical clarity. Both are essential to a complete restoration, but they require different tool types and techniques.
Why marble requires specific formulations
Marble is a calcium-based stone, softer than granite or engineered quartz. The wrong diamond formulation can cause surface damage, swirl marks or inconsistent finishes. Marble-specific pads use softer bond matrices and finer diamond concentrations to work with the stone rather than against it.
