Grinding tools and edge abrasives

Floor tooling cannot reach a perimeter, a stair nosing or a vertical return. Edge abrasives exist so those areas can be brought to the same finish as the field, which is where inconsistent work is most obvious.

How to choose
The decisions that actually change the outcome, rather than the specifications that are easiest to compare.
- Match the sequence used on the field
- Edge tooling has to run the same grit progression as the floor. A different sequence leaves a visible band around the perimeter, which is the most common giveaway of rushed work.
- Diameter follows access
- The largest tool that reaches the work is usually the right one. Smaller abrasives wear quickly and add cost without improving the result.
What it will not do
- Slower per square metre than floor tooling; a poor choice for open areas
- Hand-held use makes flatness dependent on operator skill
