Polishing powders
Crystallising and abrasive powders that develop gloss on calcite stone through combined mechanical and chemical action.
Polishing powders act on the stone surface itself rather than simply abrading it, which is why they achieve a depth of gloss on marble and limestone that mechanical abrasion alone does not.
They are specific to calcite stone. On granite and most engineered surfaces they do very little, because the chemistry depends on the calcium carbonate reacting.
What it is used for
- Final polishing of marble, limestone and travertine
- Restoring gloss to etched areas without a full re-hone, where damage is shallow
- Bringing benchtops to a high polish after honing
- Spot repair of dulled patches within an otherwise sound polished floor
How to choose
The decisions that actually change the outcome, rather than the specifications that are easiest to compare.
- Correct for the stone type
- Powders are formulated for calcite stone. Using one on granite wastes product and time; granite needs a different approach entirely.
- Water ratio and working time
- Powders work as a slurry within a specific consistency and working window. Too dry and the surface can burn; too wet and the gloss never develops.
- Full removal afterwards
- Residue left in grout joints and against skirtings dries to a visible haze that is harder to remove later than it would have been to rinse out properly.
What it will not do
- Little to no effect on granite or most engineered stone
- Cannot correct deep etching, scratches or an uneven hone
- Requires controlled water and thorough rinsing, which is awkward on some sites
