Polishing pads

Final-stage pads that develop gloss on stone already honed to a consistent surface, including marble-specific tooling.

Polishing pads work at the top of the sequence, closing an already-consistent honed surface until it reflects. They remove very little material, which is precisely why the honing beneath them has to be right.

On calcite stone such as marble, pads are often used with a powder or compound; the pad supplies the mechanical action while the chemistry does part of the work.

What it is used for

  • Developing gloss on marble, limestone and travertine after honing
  • Maintaining a polished finish without returning to grinding stages
  • Bringing benchtops and vanities to a finish matching the original
  • Refreshing traffic lanes where the polish has dulled but the surface is sound

How to choose

The decisions that actually change the outcome, rather than the specifications that are easiest to compare.

The honing beneath decides the result
A polishing pad amplifies whatever it is run over. On an inconsistently honed surface it produces patchy gloss, and no amount of extra polishing corrects it.
Speed and pressure control
Too much speed or pressure burns the surface or glazes the pad. Both faults look like a polish that will not develop, which invites exactly the wrong response.
Stone-specific tooling
Marble and granite polish by different mechanisms. Tooling intended for one frequently underperforms on the other, and marble-specific pads exist for that reason.

What it will not do

  • Cannot remove scratches, etching or lippage
  • Will not raise gloss on stone that was never honed consistently
  • Some stone, including many honed limestones, will not take a high polish at all

Where this sits in the process

Equipment only makes sense in the context of the stage it belongs to.
