Other Natural Stone restoration and care

Slate, onyx, quartzite, engineered surfaces and less common stone — assessed individually before any method is chosen.

Not every surface falls into a tidy category. Slate, quartzite, onyx, engineered quartz, sintered stone and various composites all turn up in Australian homes and buildings, and each behaves differently enough that a method suited to one can damage another.

The critical step with an unfamiliar surface is identification. Whether the material is calcite or silicate, natural or engineered, and whether it carries a factory finish that cannot be reproduced on site, all determine what should happen next — and occasionally the correct answer is that refinishing is not appropriate at all.

If you are not certain what your surface is, that is completely normal and it is a reasonable reason to ask. Photographs and a description of how it behaves — whether water darkens it, whether anything has etched it — usually narrow it down quickly.

  • Behaviour varies widely; identification comes before method
  • Some engineered surfaces carry factory finishes not reproducible on site
  • Natural stone may be calcite-based or silicate-based, which changes everything
  • Some materials are best cleaned and maintained rather than refinished

Common problems

What goes wrong, and whether it can be put right

Described as you would notice it, then what is physically happening, then what restoration can realistically achieve.

    An unfamiliar surface that has gone dull, marked, or patchy

    Cause
    Could be etching, abrasion, residue, coating failure, or a factory finish wearing — they look similar to a non-specialist.
    Outlook
    Identification first. The honest position is that the right approach cannot be determined from a category name alone.

    Damage to an engineered or reconstituted surface

    Cause
    Impact, heat, or chemical exposure. Engineered surfaces often carry a finish applied during manufacture.
    Outlook
    Sometimes improvable, sometimes not. Where a factory finish cannot be reproduced on site we will say so rather than attempt it.

Day-to-day care for other natural stone

A good share of the damage we repair was avoidable. This is the short version of how to avoid it.

Do

  • Identify the material before applying any product to it
  • Use pH-neutral cleaners as the safe default when unsure
  • Test any new product in an inconspicuous area first

Avoid

  • Assuming a product safe on one stone is safe on another
  • Acidic cleaners on any surface you cannot positively identify
  • Abrasive pads on engineered finishes
