The problem
What actually goes wrong
Stairs concentrate wear. Every user lands in roughly the same place, so the centre of each tread dulls and hollows while the edges stay comparatively fresh. Nosings take impact and chip, and on an open stair the exposed edge is both the most damaged and the most visible part.
Feature stonework — a carved surround, a solid basin, a bullnosed sill — has shaped profiles that no floor machine can address.
Assessment
What gets established before any work starts
These decide the method. Answering them wrong wastes an entire stage.
- Reading the wear pattern, which on stairs is uneven by nature and dictates where material can and cannot be removed.
- Checking nosings and arrises for chips and losses, since these define how finished the stair looks.
- Establishing whether treads are solid stone or a thinner cladding, which sets a hard limit on refinement.
- Considering slip resistance on the tread surface, which is a safety constraint on a stair rather than an aesthetic choice.
Approach
How the work is decided
Described as a set of judgements rather than a fixed sequence, because that is how it genuinely works.
Stair work is largely hand and small-machine work. The surfaces are narrow, the profiles are shaped, and the geometry is unforgiving, so this is slower than equivalent floor area.
Treads are refined evenly rather than chased flat. Removing enough material to erase a hollow can thin a tread and round its nosing, and the cure would be worse than the complaint.
Nosings and edges are repaired and re-profiled where needed, matched to the existing profile.
Finish is chosen with slip resistance in mind. On a stair that generally means honed rather than fully polished, whatever is on the adjoining floor.

Practicalities
Things worth knowing in advance
The details that affect how the job runs, and that are easier to plan for than to discover midway.
- Thin cladding limits everything
- Where treads are a thin stone cladding rather than solid, there is very little material to work with. Establishing this early prevents an approach that would grind through.
- Safety constrains the finish
- A polished stair tread is a hazard. Where the adjoining floor is polished there will be a visible difference in sheen between floor and stair, and that is the correct outcome rather than a mismatch.
Limits
What restoration will not fix
Stated plainly, because finding out on the day suits nobody.
- Hollow-worn treads can be evened out but not always brought fully flat, particularly on thin stone.
- A missing section of nosing is a repair, and on a prominent edge the repair will be findable on close inspection.

Questions
Common questions
Partly. Taking enough material off to erase the hollow completely can thin the tread and change the nosing profile, so the sensible aim is a substantially more even tread rather than a perfectly flat one. What is achievable depends on whether the treads are solid stone.
Close, but a stair tread should not be brought to the same gloss as a floor for safety reasons. A honed stair alongside a polished floor is a deliberate difference, not an inconsistency.
