Project overview

Historical restoration of the Sydney Cove 1808 terrazzo map at First Fleet Park, personally carried out by Tony Mastrorillo before Stone Polishing Solutions was established.

The challenge

Before restoration, the surface of the map was dull and the colours of the water and land had faded. Its deteriorated protective coatings, inscriptions and decorative details all needed attention.

The restoration approach

Tony Mastrorillo carried out controlled mechanical diamond refinement, removed the deteriorated protective coatings, repaired the inscriptions and reconstructed decorative details, followed by ongoing maintenance of the map.

The result

Colour definition and surface clarity were recovered, as shown in the photograph taken after restoration, circa 2007–2008.
